OK, got you.
It seems to me like those kind of heads partly got into it because of sampling. They probably had a background in jazz/funk/soul and recognized some of the sounds producers were incorporating and even centering their beats on.
That jazz/funk/soul knowledge is something that this generation is most definitely lacking. I bet 337guy doesn't know who George Clinton is, and can only name a few James Brown songs if any.
I love listening to 90s hip hop and hearing a sample from the golden age of funk.
