Bill Haley and His Comets record “Rock Around The Clock” On April 12, 1954— Bill Haley and His Comets recorded “ (We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock.” If rock and roll was a social and cultural revolution, then “ (We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock” was its Declaration of Independence.

Guitarist Danny Cedrone, who played the blazing solo, was paid $21 for his efforts. Unfortunately, he fell down a flight of stairs two months later and never got to see the fame the song would earn.

From 1951: Jackie Brenston & The Delta Cats - Rocket 88

Sam Phillips said this was the first rock song. Ike Turner on guitar.

You could also argue that Big Joe Turner's Shake, Rattle and Roll (later covered by Bill Haley) was the first true R&R, but let's be honest - Haley and his Comets were white and that made all the difference.

Prior to 1954 most "white" music was like Patti Page, Doris Day, Eddie Fisher, Perry Como. I was in Jr. High in 1954, and me and my friends couldn't get enough of Rock Around the Clock, after the mundane music we had to listen to before then.

But the true spirit of what became rock traces back to the anguish and frustration of the 1930s-40s Mississippi delta region imo

It had a good roughly 50 year run.

It wasn't even the first R&R record by Bill Haley

1952

Danny Cedrone would later recycle this guitar solo for "RATC"

Also note this features a steel guitar solo. Steels would eventually be left out of the standard rock band setup of lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and drums.

The Maddox Brothers & Rose - "George`s Playhouse Boogie" (1949)

The guitar part at :42 was later repeated by Nashville session ace Grady Martin on the rockabilly classic "Train Kept A-Rolllin'" by the Johnny Burnett Trio

True, but Rock Around the Clock got a lot of impetus through the movie of that same name as well as it was featured in Blackboard Jungle in 1955.

And it's really a great, great song. The instrumentation is incredible.

When you have a minute check out the history of lead guitarist Franny Beecher. Just a spectacular player.

Fixed it for you. Rock 'n roll lasted from 1954 to about 1965; by 1966 The Beatles were releasing Rubber Soul and Revolver; The Stones had "Paint It Black", and The Beach Boys had "Pet Sounds" with its transformational song Good Vibrations. Rock 'n roll matured into a more artistic and less danceable form simply known as "rock."
