Quincy Jones was a big difference. Had a pulse on what was happening in the R&B/dance floor world. The Holland Brothers sound was slightly corny & out-of-touch even for '75.
Add in the maturation of Michael's voice (21 y/o) by 1979 & a more experienced direction in his songs.
MJ was no longer singing "Cinderella Stay Awhile" but rather "Rock With You". There's sultriness & fire in his vocal experimentation throughout "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" as opposed to in the higher-pitched one-note pleadings of "We're Almost There". There's more hurt & loss in his ballad "She's Out of My Life" than there was in the Anne-Murray-esque "One Day In You Life".
Despite being a master of R&B, Off The Wall still trapped him in the R&B genre. His vioce was too good to be chained to one genre. He was destined for bigger things. It took Thriller which had R&B, Dance, Rock, Ballads, & super-star duets to grease the cross-over rail and become a superstar for the world.
