Awesome read. I love the dead. It's too bad they were dead before I was musically alive. I have seen Lesh twice. The first time I ever got the chance to see him was an absolutely amazing show for an infinite number of reasons, and i had been waiting and anticipating it for a year, I was like a kid on Christmas morning before the show. Completely and totally happy as I anxiously awaited something I couldn't imagine. Kanye West ruined the concert. And it is the reason I hate that jackass and I legitimately and honestly hope he contracts AIDS and the worse case of hemeroids in world's history.

When I was in high school, probably 2004 or so, I got in touch with a guy through a Grateful Dead forum who mailed me his box of concert tapes. Probably 50 shows on cassette in a tuperware container at my house. I listen to them all the time, I have them playing at the PMAC on tape

Well written piece. I'm pretty ambivalent about the Dead, but always respected what they did for concert audio-in spite of their own best interests financially.
One of the trippiest things I got from this was that Phil Lesh likes Brad Paisley.

Brad Paisley is awesome. One of the few current country artists that is a great musician.

i was lucky enough to see the grateful dead 6 times from 93-95.
my first show was a religious experience for me. i had a moment during bertha that was like the scene in the church during the blue brothers. I SEE THE LIGHT!
ill never forget that moment for the rest of my life, it felt like all 70k people at the show were cosmically connected (this was before i ever ingested any sort of pschydelic).

Have it, and I was there. $5 to get in. It was Bobby's 30th b-day, but Donna stole the show. It was considered one of the best shows of that tour and just 5 months after the legendary Barton Hall show at Cornell. I still have the T-shirt around here somewhere.
There must be 300ish Maxell XL II-90's in my basement of 1st gen bootlegs from the '70's/'80's.

I thought it was a pretty craptastic show since they all seemed too wasted to be on stage. It plays back better than it seemed live, though. Donna's wails were minimal, and she was mostly on-key with the harmonies for once. That Sugaree is killer!

b&p? remember those days?
when i moved 5 years ago i threw 100s of tapes out. i couldnt justify keeping them when i had nothing to play them back on.
i still have a few hundred shows on cd though.
my current favorite resource is the dead pod, he plays a new set everyweek. my phone and ipod are loaded with them.

I still do 'em on rare ocassions. Sooner or later I'll have to upload a bunch of the stuff I've taped or collected over the years to the archive. Glad I've hung onto it all and the machines to play them back with.

Bonnaroo was a different animal that year, different vibe from past years. I was offered crack. Who goes to a music festival to sell crack?Still had some amazing shows. Most notably i enjoyed MMJ (one of the best live shows ive seen. ever. period.), Mastodon, and i thought Jack Johnson was awesome.
