Vintage Sufjan for sure. Slow, but beautiful.

I like it. Sounds like the whole album will be similiar. Interview on pitchfork today says it is easily his most bare album. Mostly about his mother's death.

Album is streaming and it sounds great. And I haven't even really got to dig into the lyrics that much yet.

Fourth of July is an especially great song.

Album is now available on spotify for anyone interested.

It's a good album for sure. It's a bit depressing, but also beautiful at the same time...kind of like Elliott Smith. I love the opening 2 tracks, then the 3rd one reminds me a little of John Wayne Gacy...kinda creepy.

Compared to the rest of Sufjan's Catalog, I'd rank this album pretty low. All his albums are great, so that doesn't mean that this one sucks, but I really enjoy the BIG sound that he can produce - from the heavy full orchestra rock of Illinois and Michigian to the crazy electronic stuff in Adz. Seven Swans was pretty mellow but Carrie and Lowell takes it to an even darker level.

One thing that's great about this album is that the subject matter is so serious and Sufjan's delivery (lyrics and music) is perfect and comes off as genuine. You feel like you are staring into the soul of a really troubled man who lost his mom whom he had a strange relationship with. The lyrics really do pull at the heart strings, especially if you've lost someone close and if you are familiar with the back-story of this album. It's worth reading up on.

I think I am higher on it than you. I think it is a masterpiece and either his best or his second best after Illinois. Tough to imagine anything toping this one in '15 for me.

Always good to hear your perspective. I need to give this a few more listens.

Are you going to catch him on the tour?

Yep, first time. May in New Orleans. Hope he plays a mix of the new album and Illinois/Age of Adz/Michigan hits.

I've listened to it all the way through three times now. Like SUB says it is both beautiful and depressing. It is very heavy, and in general it evokes the same emotions I feel when I listen to Hospice by Antlers.

That said, I think the album as a whole is incredible. While musically it feels like going back to Seven Swans, thematically it is an appropriate follow up to Age of Adz. I actually see it as a companion piece to Age of Adz. The Amnesiac to Kid A, if you will.

I rate it highly, and is probably my 3rd favorite Sufjan album behind Michigan and Illinois.

I hope so too. The Adz tour was awesome but the lineup that he brought didn't seem to be made for playing Illinois or Michigain. It was mostly Adz, all delighted people, and seven swans. I'd expect a big show because of the venues he's playing at. Get ready for some awkward stage banter.

Ugh such a slow album.

Hope I don't fall asleep at the show.

Hah. I needed to slow down and get to sleep last night about midnight. I thought, "Perfect. I'll put on the new Sufjan. That will do the trick." I made it 4 songs in and fell asleep.

Just gave it my first full listen. Overall really enjoyed it. Should Have Known Better, Eugene, Fourth of July and The Only Thing are the highlights for me, personally. Particularly The Only Thing. Actually started that track over after the first listen.

I've listened to the album a ton the past few weeks. I really think it is my favorite Sufjan album. Maybe if you take the top 45 minutes from Illinois it would top this, but beginning to end I feel like this is his strongest. Top 5 album this decade IMO and hard to see it being topped this year.

It's not doing it for me. Maybe because it's springtime, and I'm enjoying sunshine and being outside... but this album is too dreary and depressing for me right now.

My wife said the same thing. She was working on some design projects from home the other day and tried to listen to it again. She said she got about 4 songs in, and switched it off because it was depressing her.

Anyway, there will likely be a time when I'm ready to embrace the album, but this isn't it.

And holy crap... if his current live show is based entirely off this album.

His most recent sets have included playing every song off the new album and then about ten older (mostly acoustic) songs. Chicago always closes out the encore though.

I mean... I love slow folk type shows in concert halls (as evidenced by the fact that we are sponsors of a folk/roots festival in our town). But I'd MUCH MUCH rather see Sufjan put on the freaking spectacle that he's done in the past in a live show than see a really quiet, slow show, personally.

I can verify this.

My feelings also going into it but I found the show pretty engaging. Lots of goosebumps and feels. Sufjan had to wipe his eyes at the end of a couple of songs.

I really enjoyed the stage lighting and backdrop effects. A great climatic ending and a good encore.
