My 9 year old is asking for a synthesizer for Christmas. He fiddles with music. Plays piano by ear. He just loves messing with stuff, but doesn't want to take lessons.

On the surface, I know what a synth is/does, but I'm not up to speed on everything.

We were at Guitar Center a while back and he was looking at this:

Guitar Center Link

But its listed as a keyboard controller. Can someone tell me the difference? What does it do differently than a synth?

Thanks.

A keyboard controller does not generate sounds by itself. It is plugged into another device, often a computer, to control software or another synth. A synthesizer generates sounds itself. Not all synthesizers have keys. Also, most synths do not have onboard speakers so you will have to get speakers.

You can plug a MIDI controller into an iPad as well (with the right adapter) and do some cool stuff. AudioKit Synth One is a free app that has some cool sounds. Garage Band is obviously free as well

If he's asking for a synth, get him a Korg Microkorg (or something similar)
LINK

The Microkorg has MIDI in/out/thru, so down the road you could connect it to an audio interface (like the PreSonus AudioBox) and control the thousands of soft synths that are available for computer recording.

Essentially the Microkorg is a Synth and a MIDI controller in one. Plus it has a fun little vocoder (think robot voice) to play around with.

Get him a keyboard workstation until he leans the basics of piano. He’ll thank you down the road.

If you don’t have the basics, you’ll just get lost in the sounds and end up making music out of fart samples like Gene from Bob’s Burgers.

First you learn to make music, then you can make more sounds.
