Music Board: Pick me out a drum set

I haven't played much in nearly 10 years and haven't kept up with the drum market very much. I got rid of my old set (used Pearl Exports & assorted brand symbols, I was broke back then) when I went off to college. Now things are finally calming down and I have a place to actually put a set as I've always been on the road since graduating and now I'd like to start playing again. I'm no beginner per say, but obviously I am very rusty. I'm not looking for anything too fancy, I won't be joining a band, but I would like something decent. I'd like to keep it under 1000 bucks for the kit, cymbals and other hardware if possible. I'm actually thinking Pearl Exports as they are fairly versatile and affordable.

Man, I would go with the Gretsch Catalina Maple kit.

It is an all-maple shell, which is what premium drum kit shells are made of. Not saying that birch kits are bad, but maple will give a warmer, more full tone.
The Catalina maple kit is in your price range, and you still get a great, premium sounding kit.

Own it and I don't think I will own a different kit. Sand and seal the inside of the shells and you've got a solid set. Wouldn't trade mine for anything but a set of USA Customs.

Its just the shell pack. You can get on eBay and find some great used cymbals if you don't want to fork out the money for a new pack.
I didn't read your OP carefully enough and did not see where cymbals were included in your $1000 limit.
If you want a whole new set though, there are several entry level, affordable cymbals:
Paiste PST3 and PST5s
Zildjian ZHTs, ZXTs, and ZBTs
Sabian B8s (Probably the most efficient pack to buy)
Meinl HCS or MCS

I would stay away from the zht series. I had some and they were pretty bad. I'm a zildjian guy (k customs) but the sabian B8s are solid for "lower level" cymbals.
Check eBay though. I got a sweet ride for $90 in great condition.

Yea I was thinking that used would be fine for cymbals.
