I'll vote for Mark Smith of American Analog Set. Also, a shout out to Cary Bonnecaze.

The best modern drummer is Bryan Devendorf of The National.

Good call on Muse's Howard. Phil Selway (Radiohead) is excellent, especially live, but I think he's overlooked, if not underrated.

I'm thinking Dave Grohl more from QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures, more than Grohl from Nirvana.

I love the way he writes.

The Doors certainly weren't underrated, but I think maybe John Densmore was as a drummer.
Riders on the Storm, The End, LA Woman, etc... all had great percussion.
