Gene Simmons is underrated only because nobody actually thinks he plays bass and he's actually very good - he makes Detroit rock city, sure know something, etc.
'Sure Know Something' is damn good! A lot of his work on the Dynasty album is very good.

I don't think anyone has ever questioned Geezer's ability.

Also, love them or hate them, Green Day's bassist Mike Dirnt is pretty good. The bass riff from "Longview" is one of my all time favorites.

I don't know if he's underrated or not but I've always enjoyed watching and hearing Doug Wimbish play. Dude makes sounds come out of a bass guitar I didn't think were possible ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

Mel Schacher
In the early 70s I was a huge Grand Funk fan, but I was mostly focused on Farner's singing and guitar playing. Their concerts on YouTube from that era make it obvious Schacher was amazing. One issue as to why he was so under appreciated was the sound quality in those days, and how their recordings were produced. Terry Knight thought bass players should be felt and not listened to.

I didn't think he was underrated. I think he has a signature line by Fender.
ETA: He does and it's fricking fabulous. Old 50's style slab body, tele neck but with a split p.
