I'm late to the party. Better late than never. This is the album of the year for me so far.
And by a comfortable margin.

I can't imagine that you're being serious.

I don't know about my favorite of the year, but it is pretty great, and I wasn't even much of a VW fan prior to it.
I could see not being a fan of the record, but "laughably bad" seems way strong.

I wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly not in my top 5 of the year thus far.

I just think they lost something that made them special
seems like a lot of rehash on this one. i've listened to it twice through, and didn't really dig it at all.

I liked it better than their second one, which I thought was garbage. Basically the first one was good, the second one was terrible, and this one is meh
It's got a few good songs on it, but after 3-4 listens a month or two ago I haven't listened since, which is usually a pretty bad sign

Vampire Weekend has evolved nicely in their three albums. You can here a distinct difference between the three and I like that.
As far as this album, it took some time to digest but I am wholeheartedly on board with this being one of the better albums that have come out this year.

Album is heavy up front and weak in the rear, but nowhere near "laughably bad." 3-4 very solid tracks on there.

Am I the only one that absolutely loves it?

Nah, I bought the album a few weeks ago. Like I posted earlier, it took a while to really listen to it but right now it is on repeat for me. I listened to it twice today at work.
They took some risks this album (I know that is such a cliche and cheesy saying but it is true) and I think it really paid off. Like the first two albums it is a really unique style and lyric structure that is quite refreshing.
ETA: Found this while reading r/vampireweekend...hilarious

No. Fantastic album easily top 5 of the year so far. Vampire Weekend has done a great job here of venturing into new sonic territories and also keeping that endearing quality that makes them easily like-able.

The only drawback on the album is that the songs don't translate well to live performances. At least at the festivals they typically play.
I watched a few clips from their Glastonbury performance and songs like Step and Ya Hey just aren't made to be played in front of large outdoor audiences. Songs like Unbelievers and Diane Young do just fine live, however.

I agree. Step and Ya Hey are better suited for a small indoor venue or a concert hall.
That's actually an interesting topic in and of itself: great songs that don't necessarily sound great live.
