quote:
While in prison, Haggard learned that his wife was expecting another man's child,
Wonder if this inspired this song:
“The old man from the mountain's coming home, home, home
Thought I'd better warn you, so I called you on the phone
Get rid of Joe, the grinder, you better be there alone
The old man from the mountain's coming home
Don't need no friendly Henry's warming up my bed
And the old man from the mountain means what he said“
I always thought it was odd that he sang those lyrics so calmly.

Merle is a much better songwriter and wrote over 30 of his 38 number one hits.
He is very proficient with multiple instruments.
Jones has arguably the best country song but his catalog of songs is much shorter than Merle Haggard.

But an inferior artist to Haggard who wrote a lot more songs, has just as good of a voice and can play multiple instruments with ease.
As an an overall artist, he is superior to Jones.

If he didn't die at such a young age then this would more true.

He has more number one hits than both.
Rogers was in rock then crossed over in the 70s. However his emphasis was more on singing than lyrics.
Dolly Parton was into duets especially with Rogers which Haggard didn't do.
The music and songs of Haggard were more gritty/folk and it tackled issues of life that the others didn't do.

Do you know this to be a fact or you just guessing? I don't know the answer, but I do know that Jones' catalog is enormous

It his hard to argue against his 54 years in the music business and his songwriting ability.

I'm talking about his songs that he wrote that he sang and became hits.
Jones strength was his voice but he wasn't much of a songwriter.
You can't go just by vocals but overall body of work.

Ok so we are only talking about songs that someone wrote AND sang in order to determine depth of catalog? The criteria in this thread is very confusing. I never said George Jones was the greatest songwriter. I said he was the greatest country singer. Merle Haggard thought so too.

Sounds like you guys are saying someone has to write AND sing in order to go from "country singer" to "country artist"? Ok. Seems arbitrarily made up for this thread, but I'll buy it. What about if they sing and write but don't produce their own music? Does that still count?

And George Jones thought Merle Haggard was one of the greatest country singers besides Hank Williams.

Country music is and should always be the songwriting and the stories it tells.
This is why Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and others get so much respect.
You don't have to do both but the good majority of the country legends are decent songwriters unlike other genres where an emphasis on songwriting is less.
Singing is one thing but songwriting is hard and it takes a special kind of talent to turn them into one hit after another.

I agree with you for the most part. And for the record, I'm an enormous Haggard fan. I think Jones, Haggard, and Paycheck have the three best country music voices of all time. I just happen to also think that Jones' voice was the best of the three.
I also just like to argue

well, Jones also hated himself, hated being known as the greatest country singer to ever live, and routinely tried to kill himself with booze and drugs. so, it's not that surprising that he didnt own the moniker.

If Jones had a better voice than Haggard then it wasn't by much.
Posted on 3/30/23 at 12:58 pm to Sam Quint
Jones had nothing on Haggard when it came to the hard drugs.
Posted on 3/30/23 at 1:28 pm to dchog
I think you dont know as much about George Jones as you're acting like you do.
Posted on 3/30/23 at 2:19 pm to dchog
I'm honestly curious what you think you know that would lead you to believe that Jones had nothing on Haggard when it came to drug use. I'm not trying to romanticize it or anything, because I think George Jones's life is absolutely tragic. But I really dont think you know much about him.
