Not sure I would call it bland.
To me it grows uninteresting pretty quickly, but it's unique, the songwriting is good, and I think he's very talented.

I just listened to a few of SS's songs. The few I heard were very bluesy and sang with a little twang. I might have to pick up one of these records. Which one would you suggest??? I'm way more of a rock/blues guy than a country fan.

Better to let the real SS fans advise, but I'm guessing they'll tell you one of his first two albums is a better reflection of the music that brought him his fanbase.

Put on Metamodern and listen to the entire thing. Put on Sailors Guide, and listen to the entire thing.
Both are really short listens under 40 min.
