Mariah Carey vs. Whitney Houston... who's a better singer?

Who's better? I had a heated debate.
Judge it however you like pertaining to singing style.
I'll withold my opinion at first so as to not give momentum to one or the other.

Mariah was good until she began to whisper every song. Whitney never backed down (although perhaps drug induced).

Whitney Houston by a good margin for me.
Mariah Carey has an unquestionably broader vocal range but the soul in her voice can't touch Whitney.

That's the argument I was making.
The person I was arguing with described Whitney Houston's super bowl national anthem as boring compared to what Maria can do.

It's Whitney. I saw them singing together on stage once, and I felt sorry for Mariah. It was clear who was better.

Maria Carey is good, but she is more of an imitator or vocal stylist. Whitney Houston could flat out sang! You heard HER. Not what she thought she was supposed to sound like. This is the difference in a true artist (whitney) and a "star" (mariah).
Other examples:
Christina Agulara: imitator
Lady Gaga (I know - everyone hates her): but she can sing too.
