Excellent album. Very mellow with great guitar work. IMO she keeps getting stronger every album:

Couldn't disagree with you more. I did not care for "West" at all. I caught her in concert back in April of '07 and thought that the stuff she was cranking out was very bad...especially since she showed so much promise with Car Wheels on a Gravel Road 10 years earlier.
She turned things around after that, but for a period of time she actually regressed from one album to another.

I definitely disagree that she has gotten stronger as time has past, but I wouldn't necessarily say she has gradually regressed either. West and Blessed were hit or miss, but Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone and the new record are both very good, IMO.
Her voice has definitely "aged", as it should. That's only natural.
This statement made me chuckle. Car Wheels is a masterpiece, but she had made some really good records prior to that. Her self-titled is outstanding, for example.

I like Lucinda. I don't agree that she gets better with age. I hate the way she distorts her voice so much now. She's always done it, but it used to work in her favor. Now it's just an annoying mouth full of marbles noise. Just mho

I agree that her earlier stuff was excellent. I thought Car Wheels was the next step in her progression...I thought it would catapult her to even bigger things. Instead, she seemed to get stuck in a bit of a rut. Not that she wasn't making very good stuff...but it didn't seem to mature (in my opinion). I love her voice and her creativity....I'm looking forward to finding the time to hear the new album.

I hear ya, I just don't understand how you can expect "bigger things" than Car Wheels. I mean, it's considered by many to be one of the best Americana records of all time.
