So my pickup switch is going in and out for my neck pickup and after doing a little reading it seems like it’s a common problem. I am thinking about upgrading the pick ups on it as well. Seems like the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates have great reviews for the music I play. Is this something I can install myself? Any other pickups I should look into?

if you have to ask, I'd say just bring it to guitar center,..or the fret shack..and have it done cleanly, no headache, and they'll even fix your switch.

I’m in southeast Houston. Kinda think there should be more good stores around here but I’ll take it to Danny’s D’s in League City. Has any had a good experience at the Pasadena GC?

I, honestly, was not impressed by my pearly gates neck pickup that I installed in my red LP. It doesn’t sound bad, but it just doesn’t have much life in it, I find.

As for bridge pickups, I really love my classic 57’s that I put in my blue LP.

Can you solder?

If yes, I think you can handle it. Not even being a smartass. I never learned to solder so off to FretShack mine would go.

Unless you are in Texas as your name suggests.

My favorite replacement pickups for Les Pauls that I don't wind myself are the Duncan Slash signature pickups. Basically a Duncan Alnico II Pro (aka, a great classic PAF style) with a slightly different voicing to make lightweight modern LPs sound more like old heavy LPs. Available in black, zebra or under caps.

The Duncan Antiquity PAFs are great too but they are not potted, meaning you may have squeal issues in high gain, high volume environments.

I'm a huge fan of a Pearly Gates HB in the bridge position of an alder or ash HSS or HH strat, but I've yet to find one in a LP that delivered the goods for my ears. Their relationship with mahogany is a little too nasally midrange for my ears. But that's just my opinion, many guys love 'em.

Another sweet LP match for a Duncan '59 neck is their '59 bridge wind. You don't see 59/59 as often as JB/59, but the 59 duet are GREAT pickups alone and together.

The big difference in the APII Pros and the '59s are the latter use Alnico 5 magnets. A5 has more of a midrange scoop compared to A2. If you want a more gain-class hard rock LP versus as classic LP, A5 humbuckers in general are a great way to lean heavier without sacrificing cool gritty and clean tones.

The JB has an A5 at its heart as well. It's basically an overwound '59 with a subtle but cutting upper midrange slice thanks to the overwind.
