I'm in the market for a 20-25W amp head new or used. Excluding combo amps, what's the best bang for my buck? I'd prefer tube over solid state, but I'm open to suggestions. Also as much as I'd love a more high end brand like Mesa, I gotta keep it under $400 . What do you recommend?

Look up "The Amp Guy" on FB. He's in Cullman, AL and will build you just about anything you want. There are some clips on his page. Great prices. I've played a 5E3 he built, crazy-loud for 15w.

frick yes. Let's do.

After reading your needs and not wanting a combo ..for around $400..I'm going to say

Orange Micro Terror 20-watt Head LINK

That's about $150 new on sweetwater.

And then I'd rest it on top of a used 1×12 vintage 30 speaker.

like this

Doesnt have to be an orange, can be a marshall, engl etc. Vintage 30 speaker is what is important.

I'd save up and buy a 5150 head though. That's actually what I did, made a world of difference when I stopped fricking around.

Wow those are great sounding amps. The only drawback is the general physical appearance of his builds. I've already finished constructing the speaker cab on my current project minus the hardware and the tolex covering. Just needing the right amp to power it.

You should save up for another $250 and find a used peavey 5150.

I got this one for $680 on Ebay. Tried and true amp. But if you are wanting to stay around the wattage you mentioned..the orange terror and the micro terror may be something to look into if you like metal.

boss katana also makes an affordable head.

Yeah I'm trying to keep it low wattage. Mainly looking for something to play around the house. I don't have much need for something that is going to rattle the windows.

I have a Peavey 6505MH. It's pretty much the old 5150 circuit, but in a mini head format. You can choose 1, 5, or 20 watts output. You can find them used for under $400. IMO sounds fantastic for playing at bedroom levels.

I knew this was gonna happen. Eventually you can’t help but peak at other models. I’m really liking the Mesa Mini Rectifier 25 and the Marshall Silver Jubilee Mini. Of course they are 3x what I was wanting to spend but that’s not stopping me from justifying making the purchase to myself.

Orange Dark/Tiny Terror, Peavey Classic 30 (currently have and is great), or Vox AC15 would be my top choices for that price range.

Seems like if you were looking for something to play in your room a combo would be exactly what you needed. You're talking under 10w if you want a tube amp and 95% of those are little combos. If you go half stack, get you a micro terror or the Marshall mini stack.

What you should do that is spend all your money and pick up a nice old Mesa Boogie Mark III. And I do mean all your money...

While ordinarily I’d agree, I’ve already built myself a speaker cabinet. I’m just waiting on my custom grill cloth to come in, and then I’ll decide what to wrap the cab in. I just need an amp to power it now.

Well gotta say I havent seen a rig take off from that direction but I'm sure it'll all work out for you!

I have an Orange Crush Pro 120 solid state amp for backup and have nothing but praise. I used to use it in my room all the time on low, but the tone definitely changes with volume. Solid state, but Orange replicates the breakup you get with turning a tube amp up.

Pretty sweet amp but you can get the micro terror for half the price.....the world is your oyster. FWIW my head is a mid 70s Music Man 65 reverb, and it stays on half power unless we're playing outdoors

What speakers are you loading it with? 2x12s, 4x10s, 2x15s

That would help to see what kind of wattage you need to send. And post some pictures! Turn this into a build thread

I’m just trying to keep myself occupied with all of the corona madness. I have all kinds of free time during the day I need to fill now.

I cut the baffle for a 10” Celestion Greenback. I can always recut it for a 12” Greenback. I gave myself some room to play around. My problem is that I’m cursed with the desire to want to customize everything, so why go out and buy a cab when I can just build it myself? I actually repurposed an old peavy combo amp for my daughter. It started out as me having the bright idea to just rewrap it in new Tolex with a better speaker, but i ended up building a new cab when I realized it was built out of piece of crap MDF board.

Repurposed Peavey Rage SS combo

The new project
