It mixes perfectly with Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus. They're both are in C major....
I took a fairly deep dive in to Synth Pop a few years ago. There are tons of forgotten or little known British classics from that period that never really got significant airplay in the US. Yazoo, Xymox, Book of Love and When in Rome just to name a few....

Heard it on the radio yesterday, and paid closer attention to the lyrics. My takeaway was that they deserved each other, and not in a good way

Human League is from Sheffield, so that's plausible.

TIL that "The Promise" was not sung by Depeche Mode and was, in fact, sung by When In Rome.
Haven't thought of some of those songs in 20 years.
