Thanks for the info, guys.
You know, Randy Rhoads is the singular figure that got me into guitar and metal. These past few days since Kerslake bassed, I've been listening to BoO and DoaM over and over, and I've been reminded how truly great everyone involved was.
It really does sound different than almost any other metal - and it was done in 1980 and 1981! I mean, this shite REALLY blew Black Sabbath into the stone ages. If you don't get chills just from the opening bass riff on Believer, then something is wrong with you.
Randy really was bringing something new and special to the table. Just listen to the intro arpeggiating on Diary - and then he turns it into a metal riff. Mind-blowing. Also, has their ever been a more frenetic song than SATO? It seems at all points to ALMOST careen off the rails, but somehow stays in place. Gottdamn I love that shite.
It's truly a tragedy that he died at 25. They caught lightning in a bottle. It's amazing that Ozzy was able to do the same with Zakk Wylde (and to a lesser extent Jake.)

This is the worst part to me. Iommi carried that name for about 15 years after Ozzy left, touring and recording new music with several different singers and musicians. They had all that time to stop him but didn't. The Heaven and Hell tour came after the reunion with Ozzy so maybe that's why Sharon took it. Iommi should own that name outright.
quote:
Ozzy filed a lawsuit against Tony in May 2009, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Osbourne sued Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi's profits from use of the name.
That’s how Sharon essentially got control of Black Sabbath. Ozzy and Tony are now 50 50 partners thanks to that lawsuit. Since Sharon manages Ozzy she is able to control when and where he plays. Unless she signs off on Ozzy touring or recording, the band can’t do anything. Tony can’t hire a frontman and book a tour because Ozzy and Sharon won’t sign off on it. Don’t overlook the vindictiveness of Sharon either. I’m sure she takes great pleasure in being able to control when Black Sabbath can hit the road and make money. It’s payback for Tony firing Ozzy’s arse in 1979

This video of of Lee popped up in my YouTube suggestions. Even with all of his health problems his drumming is still very recognizable in the same way that guitar tone easily identifies all the great guitarists. Even with colon cancer and bone cancer, he looks like the happiest guy on earth in this vid.
