I still enjoy them. Their first 3 albums were great then they shite the bed a little with the fourth album, although I still enjoy a few songs off of it. The last one wasn't too bad nor was it great. Even Caleb Followil has talked about hating how over produced and commercial they have become.

Blame Bono. Convinced them to start writing "radio rock" that sounds good in an arena.
This happened after Because of the Times when they were supporting U2 on a leg of their tour that year.

This.
They were my favorite working band through those first three albums, but you could see/read it coming. I don't put it all on the label, either. From what I've read, the boys were all in for the arena/big time thing. If what is said above by Caleb is correct, I'm glad they're regretting it.

I really really like their first album as well. I think Trani is probably their second favorite song of mine. (Ragoo is my favorite KOL song.)
I think I still have to give the nod to A ha shake as my favorite album. To me, it sounds really cohesive, and it just rocks the frick out. Taper jean girl gets me amped up.

well when you sign record deals and have to crank out 4 albums in 3 years, the material you write gets watered down

There isn't a bad song on Aha Shake or Youth and Young Manhood

Yup still listen to it. KOL was my favorite band at one time. They came out with interesting music, got some exposure, and then sold out. Not the first band to do this nor will they be the last. Staying true to making interesting music usually doesn't result in financial success. It is sad that it has to be that way.

Their first 3 records are all favorites of mine and I dont mind Only by the Night and Come Around Sundown. It does piss me off going to see them now with 10,000 other "fans" who dont know anything of them besides their last two records. It's a part of life and they paid their dues. You can't blame them for wanting to be successful. I will say this though, for every POS single they put out now, I still find numerous gems on the records that won't get played on the radio

I agree. People bitched about how terrible sex on fire was (and they were right, it was a festering pile of feces). But nobody mentioned the awesomeness of the song "I want you".

I didn't get the love for their early albums. It just sounded like sloppy bar rock n' roll.

You don't like this song?
KOL -- Trani

Which to some, myself included, was very raw and refreshing. A nice change from the overproduced shite you hear on the radio.

Sloppy?

I think I understand what he is saying. There was something a bit grimy about their first two albums. I think that's what a lot of people miss in their current stuff.

The newer albums are overproduced and lose a lot of the soul and grit the older ones had.
The real kings of Leon died when they made the 4th record.

I wouldn't say sloppy, I would say raw. Which is partially what made the first album so great.
