Know how I know you've never seen one of his live shows?
Yeah, I've never seen him live.

Bruce was authentic, in an era of processed, formulaic pop music (sound familiar?) But everything runs its course. You can only play Born To Run so many times until you start mailing it in, especially if you and your buds are all sixtysomething. At this stage, people go see him for the experience more than the music, and that's okay. The Dead weren't that great in their latter years, either, but people still love them.
My main criticism is the album work. It never was any good to begin with. I hear where you are coming with the formulaic pop commentary, although I feel like that's a perpetual fact of life.

It is pretty amusing that Bruce still plays working class hero while his daughter hangs out with polo players.
I'm just like YOU!...except I have an 18 car garage with a helipad in the back yard!

Same thread once a month..."Springsteen is overrated". Just rename it "I don't like Springsteen". Then list your favorite band and let the OT tear into it.

I've never really been a huge fan of Bruce, but I don't deny his impact and influence on music.
I think a great deal of his following was built up during his early touring when he would put on four hour shows. He, along with Garth Brooks, Adele, and Jimmy Buffett, is one of the few artists that can sell out a tour/venue in a matter of ten minutes. I remember he came to BR in the 80s and sold out the Assembly Center in 17 minutes or so.
I don't own any of his music, but I'd sure as hell go see him in concert.

The title track and Thunder Road are bad.
I'm a millennial and even I can tell you this is an absurd statement.

I abandoned my fandom years ago. Got tired of the repetitive themes and his politics, I guess.
Some opinions posted make it seem as if he has little to no talent. I don't see it that way as there was a point from Born to Run to Darkness on the Edge of Town to The River where he was pretty damn good when considering his songwriting, quality albums and marathon live shows. It is during this period that he really cemented his reputation and when people think of "Bruce" it is based upon what he did during this 5+ year stretch.
I lost interest somewhere in the 80's and just never made it back around to him as a fan, other than the occasional sampling of Darkness or The River.

Darkness on the Edge of Town is one of my favorite albums. His live shows kill.

I was in the exact same boat until I moved to Jersey.

While I don't have the dislike that you appear to have, I agree they are more than a bit overrated. Part of it is their live show (obviously the ESB fans love all that stuff). Part of it is that Bruce is a really good songwriter.
However, I've felt that for "that style" of music, Bob Seger always (with or without the SBB) did it better, pulled it off more efficiently and sounded more sincere while doing it.
FWIW.

Check. Seger's songs and melodies are WAYYYY better...and without the pretense of being deep.

As someone else said, ever seen either live? Both great, but I'd never say Seger was more "sincere".

I liked them for about 4 years back when they were current. Then it just got old and I couldn't stand it. It doesn't hold up. Did the world a favor and threw my BS albums into the dumpster.
