Most everyone is familiar with contract riders of famous artist where they will require all sorts of ridiculous items, and food be provided in their dressing rooms at the concert venue, Van Halen was famous for requiring bowls of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed. Johnny Cash's contract required the following be provided for him " Soap and running water, a roll of paper towels, a mirror, a chair, and a place to hang clothes."

But very few know WHY VH wanted this.

As Paul Harvey was famous for saying, here's the rest of the story.

As part of every VH show there were extensive sound checks and precise equipment set-up requirements (generally driven by Eddie). Eddie wanted things HIS way and TBH I don't blame him. Bc the band didn't have time every night to make sure everything was done properly, and in accordance with the rider, they added the removal of the brown M&Ms to the rider to ensure the venue READ the entire rider. IF they went to the dressing rooms and the brown M&Ms were removed then the odds were really good Eddie got what he wanted set-up wise but if the brown M&Ms weren't removed then he figured things were set-up correctly. Pretty ingenious if you ask me. Props to him for this.

Johnny was my 2nd cousin, once removed. His family has deep roots in my home community.
Met him and shook his hand once, but never got to spend any time with him.

He is highly undervalued by most.

By far the least talented of the Highwaymen yet somehow the most famous by a significant amount.

The others didn't have his charisma IMO. His live shows were superior.

Folsom Prison Blues is the first song I think of when someone asks for songs ahead of their time. One of my all time favorite artists and so many good tracks.

He was incredibly important for the evolution of country music.

Btw, it seems that they're coming out with a new album based on poems he composed.
