Gone but definitely not forgotten. He was a brilliant song writer and a genuine and heartfelt singer. Sure do miss him.

Singers/Musicians and airplane crashes, the world has lost a lot of talented people that way. The NTSB found that in the crash that killed Croce the pilot had severe coronary artery disease, had ran the 3 miles form his hotel to the airport, and speculated he may have become physically impaired during takeoff.

Came here to chime in with this. Crazy how many greats are gone to crashes.

Shitty private planes in the 1970's. And people willing to fly in sketchy conditions.

Didn't SRV have a helicopter fly into the side of a hill due to fog or some shite like that.

YouTube video of him playing Operator Is depressing. To my novice guitar playing arse it does NOT look easy, and he's fricking singing. Of course Maury is behind him playing something just a tad harder.

Something in the water/air back then on something else. Jim was only 30 when he died and Maury was 24 - they look like they're in their 40s in that video.

RIP. I know the SGA guy from Northwestern who is kidded by folks over the years as being "The Man Who Killed Jim Croce" - he appears in at least one of those documentaries - Doug Nichols. He worked for my dad in the 1970s and later with him as a beverage company rep.

I'm a young guy, but man do I love his music. Sucks for the people that were true fans of his when he was alive and witness him die so young. Fantastic singer and songwriter. Might be one of the best IMO.

It's amazing how many good songs he put out, even stuff you never hear on the radio like "Lover's Cross" or "Workin' at the Carwash Blues." I get sad thinking about how many gems we lost out on.

My Dad taught at Northwestern then (I was little) but the rumor was the band was partying, cops were called and they agreed to leave.
Small airport, at night and the pilot got confused and took off from the taxi way, not enough room and they hit about half way up in the pine trees.

At least some small part of it was probably the widespread use of cigarettes in basically every setting that wasn't a church.

That and Croce worked as a truck driver even through most of his music career.

I always notice this.

And "black don't crack" ? bullshite. Look at Otis Redding. Isn't he another "27 club" member. That dude at BEST and earliest looked 35.

Gordon Lightfoot? Beards and heroin though.

Oh those lyrics. Ever just sit back and feel them drift across your mind? He was the ultimate troubadour - tender and touching - resonated with everybody. Then he'd crank out some funny shite like Carwash Blues and Rapid Roy. Even those lyrics were genius.

He is ultimately the reason I started playing the guitar a few years ago. If I could play anywhere near as well as he did I would perfectly content.
