Is Phil Anselmo the best hardcore metal singer of all time?

Ive seen him twice with Down and he is still on point, if anything he has gotten better with age. The way that he incorporates the growls, and groans is the best there is. Not to mention Down is so tight live.

With the caveat that “best” is subjective, he seems to be one of those very few genetic freaks who can continue to sound like he did when he was in his 20s.
Myles Kennedy and Robert Plant also come to mind, although very different singing styles.
What Phil is able to still do is pretty amazing, especially when you consider his minimal training and unhealthy lifestyle. Most of his contemporaries have since blown their voices out.

Those guys aren't metal singers, hard rock, but certainly not metal.
Joey Belladonna
Bruce Dickinson
Rob Halford
Ronnie James Dio
James Hetfield
Philip Anselmo
That's my list of metal singers.

I've seen Phil in various bands around 25 times (17 for Down) going back to 1997. His voice is a shell of its former self. He's also gotten lazy as a performer. Down does the same set every time. I'm a big fan of his but he's not what he was in the 90s.

Bruce Dickinson
