think Mustaine was the best and if he had continued to be a part of Metallica they could have been up there with the greatest rock bands ever.

Metallica is one of the greatest of all time.

LOL, if we're extending the landscape to general rock and metal as well as thrash rhythm guitarists, the best ever - EVER - was Edward Van Halen. Hands down, no question, no hesitation.

EVH was as tight of a rhythm player as he was an innovator for lead players. Pull out your old DLR-era vinyl and try to truly play along with the entire record of your choice. Not only are the leads so difficult to get, the rhythms are just as difficult to really, truly nail in proper time.

And done in the "capture what they sound like live" Ted Templeman/Donn Landee one-track, one-take era ... no Pro Tools, no punch in to fix flub every other run, and no copy and paste and paste and paste and paste to extend a good run for minutes upon minutes.
EVH was pretty innovative back there. I would say he had a huge influence on Vito Bratta of White Lion. Vito always played these little half-lead/half-rhythm type of lines throughout entire songs. Brilliant.
