Is there a such thing as a fun synthesizer that I could pick up for my two elementary aged boys to play around with? For instance, I was looking at this Behringer TD-3 synth. I watched a few videos, and I'm pretty sure they could figure out how to punch in notes.

What I don't really understand is if it can be used as a stand-alone instrument and output it to powered speakers? Or do I need something else that feeds a midi signal into it?

I have a Roland TB-03 which is very similar to the Behringer TD-3 (They're both based on Roland TB-303 which was made in the 80s).

You can use the built-in keyboard or attach a MIDI keyboard to it. It's mono output and I use an amplifier normally, but use an audio interface to play through monitor speakers. You can definitely use headphones though.

It's a little clunky to program sequences into it but it's not bad after you do it a few times. I think elementary age kids would have a lot of fun with it.

Korg also make a series of inexpensive synths called Volca, and I have the the Volca Keys, Volca Bass, and Volca Kick. These are a lot of fun as well.

I appreciate it. They had some of the colors down to $109, so I nabbed one after watching a few more videos. Behringer makes a free piece of software that I can put on the computer and it gives you a more visual keyboard and sequencer that talks back and forth. That should simplify that part of the process for them. The rest is just playing.

Korg Microkorgs are a good starter synth with a keyboard. Used on numerous records. You can get a used one for a couple hundred bucks.

You can use that one as standalone and send signal to monitors.
