The Nightcaps (1958-) are considered to be the first blues/rock group from Dallas, TX. Their only full length album was an early influence on brothers Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaughan. It has also been cited as an early favorite by Boz Scaggs & Steve Miller. The album itself was a best seller in Dallas, but was soon bootlegged, a fact that didn’t make the group happy, but it increased their influence throughout the South, all the way to Florida. They backed The Coasters at a few gigs, and also opened shows for Jimmy Reed, Bobby Vee, Ike & Tina Turner, and Bo Diddley. A newer version of The Nightcaps still perform shows today. “Thunderbird” was covered by ZZ Top on their 1975 LP “Fandango!”

KLSU Blues Show with Brian Evans and Neckbone Slim

Interesting - I guess that was after I left Baton Rouge. In the 80's I loved to go watch Neckbone and the Circuit Breakers at the Caterie (mostly). It opened whole new horizons of music for me. Especially the Nighthawks out of Baltimore. I still love Jacks and Kings - great album.

One the Circuit Breakers used to play:

The whole album is on Youtube.

Great thread.

I was in the CB;s for a really long time. We never played Dust My Broom, but we did do Shake Your Money Maker. We def did For You My Love off that Jacks and Kings rekkid. Bone was not a Nighthawks fan, but I did get him to learn Back To The City.

Cool, After I posted that and listened to the album some more I wondered if I hadn't switched those two (Dust My Broom <---> For You My Love).

My damn favorite song the CB's played. I never did connect with "the girl with the crazy glasses" but got my future wife on the floor a few times for Back to the City. And The Crawl. And Justine - OK, that was probably my favorite.

Who were you in the CB's?

ETA: The Circuit Breakers played a mix of Blues, Rockabilly, Swamp Pop, Patsy Cline; it was usually way over my head what genre exactly they were doing as someone who was very young. The Grateful Dead had opened me up to the idea with some of the Blues and Country they did. The CB's also lead me to the Fabulous Thunderbirds who were big at the time. Mathilda is a Swamp Pop one I loved that the CB's did and the Thunderbirds as well. Music used to be a whole lot of fun before it became synthesized cookie cutter crap.

Harp/lefty gittar/sax/vox from ‘85-‘92. There were a lot of Caterie gigs with some interesting sit-ins. Some kid named Tab would drive up from Houma to play the late set. He turned out pretty good.

There was also this real good looking dude who was in town shooting a movie. It took a couple of times of him begging to sing with us before we let him on the mic. Dennis Quaid was ok. One night he brought his friends to see us play at Phil Brady’s. I met Timothy Hutton, Jessica Lange and Mikail Barishikov that night. Pretty cool!

We had a lot of fun opening up for the t-birds, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins et al. Once Bone and Cathy broke up we got way more into blues from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. I was relentlessly studying Little Walter. Too bad life got in the way and Bone moved to Austin. I ended up moving to the PNW the following year, but we’re both back in the area now. We got together recently and shot the shite, so you never know…

I was guessing that might be you from the For You My Love mention. Cool stuff, those were some fun times.
