Kafka has been asking so here it is. I'll start this out with what's considered the first blues recording ever made in 1914. Here's the Victor Military Band playing a John C Handy tune:

Jumping ahead several years Robert Johnson left us a legacy of a small catalogue of songs, most of if not all of which were covered by all kinds of folks.

A couple of more decades and the King of the Universe arose. Mississippi Muddy Waters emerged to ignite the genre.

The King had sidemen, one of whom took the tin sammich/Mississippi saxophone/harmonica to new levels. Little Walter had a huge hit with this one:

Blue is a color. They say the blues arose from the cotton fields as call and response chants amongst the slaves. The blues were considered to be the music of the poor black man, but even white men could have the blues. As a wise man once told me "If you don't like the blues, boy, you've got a hole in your soul."

So much great stuff came from that small studio in Opelousas including a whole slew of Baton Rouge bluesmen. I'll dig into that later, but for now check out Lazy Lester on the Excello label:

Freddie King is considered one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert King and B. B. King.
