See my edit, Cotton. I realized I didn't really answer you in my original post.

Most is just folk, which has been around forever.
I won't/can't deny that nor will I pretend that they are breaking new ground but when has a scene ever broke new ground and did something that hasn't even been sniffed before?
Every new genre begins among the ruins of another dying genre. Thats what this new alt. country scene has been doing, taking the songwriting of the folk they grew up listening to and mixing it together with the honesty of their Outlaw Country heroes. Take into account their general disgust with the state of mainstream country today and you have a scene reminiscent of the 90s grunge era albeit not near as popular.

I saw and that was what I was trying to say. While their music definitely ventures into lines that aren't crossed within the red dirt scene the same "frick you, we're going to do this thing my way" philosphy/attitude is most definitely present and standing front and center.

I just like a song that can tell a story. Evan's a pro at that. It comes from a place of serious vulnerability and I like that.

I do as well and "Before the devil knows we're dead" immediately came to mind when I read that.

The man can just flat out write and he has devoloped a voice to tell his stories in a way that ensures that no one will ever make you believe those stories except him. Just a remarkable talent.

Which brings me to my next question and since a lot of these guys are your friends I'll understand if you don't want to answer but....
What is the drug usage like amongst these guys? Not just TT but the scene as a whole. I mean musicians are already in that "at risk group" but it seems like these guys are all above even that. Which don't get me wrong I have nothing against that. as long as its controlled, managed and consumed safely.
or if you don't want to talk about that here you can always e-mail me.

It's been my experience that they all smoke a lot of pot
Not all of them, of course, but a lot. I know one or two who are into heavier stuff but it's not all that rampant. Several guys don't even drink anymore but they definitely get high. Just comes with the territory, I guess.

Well that was a given. I just assume that everyone smokes weed its easier that way and I'm right far more often than I'm wrong.

While good to hear that actually surprises the hell out of me. Considering the genre they play definitely leads itself to the possibilty of many a night where a man's only company is his guitar, a cheap bourbon and a bag of cocaine
I think I may pay too much attention to stereotypes

is that supposed to be a good thing?

Ha! Most of the ones I know are generally well-behaved. The ones with families are great family men and the ones without are just having a good time.
Those boys can drink some whiskey, though. And I mean ALL of them.

every generation's musical movement is a good thing whether you enjoy the music they produce or not. It proves that the current generation isn't content to sit on their heels and play their fathers music. It proves they have a desire to create and build.
As long as a group of people create honest tunes and stories told by talented musicians they will always have my respect regardless of my own enjoyment of their music.

Its you Texas frickers I swear. I thought after growing up in Louisiana I could out drink most and hang with any and mostly I'm right. However you bastards from Texas always hang or even out perform
ESPECIALLY west Texas

I spent the first 22 years of my life in Louisiana! That's the explanation I give to TX folks when I drink them under the table. Boys really don't like it when girls can outdrink them.
That's what I like about musicians, they can keep up

It just impresses me...... Maybe thats some of the reason for my relationship woes
But I want to come to Austin sometime fairly soon (never been and its past time I remedy that problem). You're going to have to inform of where to go and when when I do decide to go. I want to be able to stay for about a week so hopefully I'll see a lot of these bands I'm so crazy about.

I will happily show you around. :)
Just make sure you are here Thurs-Sat for the shows...even if there's nothing in Austin, there's almost always something nearby.
Sundays and Mondays are the days we get drunk downtown because everyone's back from the road.
It's a good time.

This is why I want to be there for a full week. I want to be able to do everything someone who lives there does on a day to day basis. I have no interest in anything touristy I'm just going to be there to get shitty and see some great live music.
I'm going to attempt to schedule it for a time that I can catch TT playing. I'm dying to see them. American Aquarium would also be a plus but not a must. I MUST be able to say I've seen Turnpike Troubadours a year from now. I will accept nothing less from myself

Haha I've already got tickets lined up if you can make it in 2 weeks.
But seriously, they have been playing around here a LOT lately. Saw them on July 6 in New Braunfels, again on Labor Day in NB with Randy, saw them again tonight about 2 hours outside of Austin and will see them again on Oct. 5 in Austin.
American Aquarium is playing NB sometime soom, too, but I can't remember the exact date.

Don't tempt me with a good time. It just might be worth it for me if I grab a buddy and go just for a weekend to see them. I didn't start to REALLY LISTEN to them until about a month or two ago and now I'm addicted. I've listened to them pretty much all day today. Even during the LSU game I had the TV muted while we rocked out to TT

They play on the 5th at Nutty Brown Cafe. Jason Boland is playing a free show at the same venue 2 days earlier.
Just saying.

Dammit I have a court date on the 4th (Lousiana State Troopers don't take kindly to driving drunk even on old country gravel roads apparently
