I loved a comment that a heard in a documentary once, that heavy metal literally came through the hands of Iommi via the machine shop and its attendant clamor that took the tips of his fingers. The industrial British North, with its gloomy forecast, and Iommi's fingertips on the sheet metal cutter.

The Black Sabbath "evil" persona is the greatest gimmick in rock music history - and I mean that in the most positive way possible.
A literal "accident" (and, you can't make this up, of an industrial variety, resulting in the need to wear metal caps on his fingers) that, without which, Iommi would likely never discovered the combination of light gauge strings and drop tuning (over humbuckers) that made Sabbath's sound so unique. Couple that resulting dark, "industrial" sound with Ozzy's fricked up lyrics and the rest - as they say - is history. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time with the right tools is all it takes.

Their 1st album was deep in haunting sounds, the albums became better and better through the years. And after Ozzy left, to me, Sabbath ended.....
Volume 4 was my favorite
Not sure about being ahead of their time, but they did find a niche nobody else knew at the time
