Don't you think it's time, to give your Fans On the Music Board a progress report?

You ask for it, here you go. LOL
I have completed Justins first section. A,D and E. I can do all those pretty well. I am now working on building speed on them , one of the exercises, and changing from one to another. One of his sessions is guiding speed by timing yourself in changes per minuet. I have gotten better with that and can get 30-40 changes per 60 seconds with most of the chords being played correctly. My toughest seems to be D to A. E came pretty easy for me. I also practiced anchoring my pointer finger on all 3 chords which came pretty easy.
My fingers have toughened up. I am built up some patches on the ends of my fingers on my left hands so the pain is not there anymore. Plus, I think since the fingers dont hurt now, I am pressing the strings down a little better so I am not getting as many bad notes.
As for just playing around, I have learned the intro to Wish you were here with the correct strumming. Its not Gilmour yet but I think you can tell what song I am playing.
Feels good to be able to play that little tid bit. Getting the correct strumming was tough at first but now I think my ear is hearing it and it makes sense how the strumming sequence works. I started playing around with the solo and I can hit most of the notes but very slowly. There are some things in there that I have not done like picking notes on the neck and "sliding" so Im slow at that but I get get my fingers in the right place. Just started messing about with that a few days ago.
Gonna have some time to practice more tonight. Probably work on the speed thing then Sunday I am moving on to Section 2 of the training course. I looked ahead at it and its Amin, Dmin and Emin I believe.
I have not schedule my first concert yet but I think it will be somewhere small. Thinking about the Fox Theatre. Then I will move on to stadiums after that..
Thanks for asking. You guys have been incredibly helpful. Some of the links and pages you recommended are going to be fun once I learn what the heck I am doing.

Ooh rah man! Stay at it
When those finger calluses get thick and start showing dry skin around the edges, peel them off.

Good for you, keep it up. Speed follows good form. Get the shapes and changes down solid, speed will come naturally from that.

Lanier,
I'm also a new player. I'd love to compare notes and help to motivate each other. Unfortunately I'm having surgery on my right arm on January 9th but after I recover for a few weeks I'll gladly contribute to your thread with progress.

quote:Although slow is better than just A'0k... far better to be in time, even if not up to tempo. Speed will come.
Probably work on the speed thing then Sunday
My little crowd got me started out on (Norman Blake) Whiskey Before Breakfast, Red Haired Boy, and Greycoat Soldiers... and we just jammed slow for a long long time before branching out for any speed at all. They'd just get more intricate and we beginners stayed with playing every other note or two (at the right time)....

How long have you been playing and how far along are you? Im very new. Just learned a few chords and staring to work on them. I can play a few parts to a few songs but only by memory. Some of the chords that are in there, I have not learned yet
Are you just messing around with it or are you using a online course? Teacher?

If either one of you guys haven't done it. Check out The Mark Knopfler Thread, and watch that video: Mark Knopfler On Guitar. I think Tidalmouse posted it.

I'm a little bit ahead of you. My right arm has kept me from spending as much time on it as I'd like. Before it really started bothering me I had the nice hard fingertips. Not so much now.

Justin Guitar. Marty Schwartz on YouTube. This guy is awesome.
Finger picking basics by Justin Johnson
I've been trying to put variety into my learning so it isn't just repeating the same thing. Five minutes on this. Ten minutes on that. Before you know it an hour or two has slipped away.
When I get back to it I need to work on scales. That's how I feel at least. While I can't play I'm going to spend some time learning the fretboard better.

Well, I took my first lesson yesterday. Really enjoyed it. My friend who helped me find the instrument recommended a guy and I will be going to see him about once a month as well as carrying on with the online stuff on my own
I think I got the right guy as he explained them well. We have started off at a point that I have gotten to instead of starting from the beginning. He was satisfied with my form and the clarity of the few chords I have learned.
I was surprised but he also is teaching me music theory from the start. Im actually happy about that. He changed my picking to alternate picking which will be a change for me but I get why he wants me to do that. Its a staple learning point for him.
He is using Folsom Prison in Key of E to teach me 12 bar blues? Cant quite remember the exact wording. LOL. Also learning some Picking scale and pentatonic Scaling.
Have plenty to on. Haha
Anyway, very happy I decided to start this and starting with a teacher was a great choice...

When you develop rhythm in that picking hand ,there will be no stopping you.
You're giving yourself the greatest gift there is.
