I've done some googling, but not coming up with much help. I have an old 1/2 size acoustic guitar that my son has taken a liken to. The strings are about as old as the guitar and are just about worthless. Can I use regular acoustic strings for it, or do they make some special strings for smaller guitars? I've read a thing or two on string gauge, but to be honest it's all Greek to me. Can anyone point me to some strings to order?

Just use light gauge acoustic strings at first, later on, you can go on to something heavier if the guitar needs it. That's a good looking guitar, what brand is that?
Really, you should take it by a guitar shop, let them check the guitar out and give their recommendations. That's the best thing to do, and what I should have said first.

Thanks. Since I'm in Nashville, a guitar shop won't be hard to find.

It's a Harmony, which my research says isn't anything special. Santa got it for me at a pawn shop when I was 7 or 8 and I never really took to it. I've been trying to lean a few chords to play for my kid. He's too young to actually play it, but he loves strumming and listening to me play it.

Well good luck with it, now that you're older you may take to it. Find a good shop and let them get it in good playing order for you. The right adjustments can make all the difference. I have a parlor guitar that is about that same size that I love to play.

Ask for a set of Silk and Steels, I know Martin makes them and most everyone sells Martin acoustic strings. They are like the middle ground between nylons and steels, they are softer under the fingers, less overall tension, nice for short scales and for young hands. 12s (lights) should be sufficient.

How do those sound? As much as I am playing lately, it would be nice to have something easier to play, but only if they sound good enough to record with.

They are the middle ground between nylons and steels tonally too.
