I'm not sure there is any instrument a rock band would typically employ that he's not great at (ETA: Maybe not drums). Way better than McCartney across the board, and I think McCartney is a genius.
I guess he went more for the work/life balance and this explains why he never got grabbed up by a band who needed "1 of everything" - he was like the Swiss Army knife of rock (at least 70s/early 80s).
