Loved GFR in high school,saw them twice in the 70's. Mostly like the pre-American Band stuff better. Into the Sun, Paraniod

Grand Funk started out as one of the most hyped bands in history, their producer/manager Terry Knight had them bigger than life. I saw them at the old Loyola Fieldhouse with Bloodrock back in 1971. After their first few albums they took a more commercial approach and lost touch with a lot of old fans, while picking up a new audience in the process.

It was this tour that an older friend of mine went to in Fort Worth (home of Bloodrock). He said Bloodrock was as good, if not better than GFR. I own Bloodrock and Bloodrock 2 on vinyl. "Sable and Pearl" = the jam.

Because of this thread, I fired up the YouTube of GFR's greatest hits and ran it through the stereo while cooking dinner the other night. Solid.

I've always thought the most underrated hard rock bands of the early 1970s are:
Captain Beyond
Bloodrock
Later Iron Butterfly, especially their Metamorphosis album.

Totally agree. They went commercial. Those early albums were outstanding. Really captured the early 70's spirit.

Was thinking about this yesterday.
Late stuff, sure you hear it on the radio often.
But Out of Time and the Red Album are amazing. GFR were amazingly talented musicians, and I think their first two albums were ahead of their time.
