I heard somewhere that he recorded the song despite objection from Col. Parker. He didn't do that very often so it must've resonated with him for some reason.

probably another song he stole from a poor blues/jazz singer/writer.

Led Zeppelin made a nice career out of stealing songs from people. they even lost a law suit, and still refuse to give full credit to the actual people who wrote the songs.

It was actually written by pseudo-country pop singer Mac Davis
