Dubstep: What's the Big Deal?

I've been checking out this dubstep stuff I keep hearing people talking about. Personally, I don't get the big deal, for better or worse.
To me it just sounds like electronic music from the '90s--all that trip-hop, jungle, drum 'n bass stuff. Doesn't sound unique enough to be a new movement or anything.
On the other hand, I don't get the hate either. I'd listen to it every now and then.
So why the seeming fanaticism and loathing?

I feel the exact same way man
Its not awful but I can't really listen to it a lot and dont find it all that amazing either

Not a fan of dubstep, but I do like electronic music in general. Stuff with the hard bass gets pretty annoying

The problem with most dubstep songs is theyre always about 2-6 minutes too long
Its a nice fun thing that people drag out for wayy too long and it becomes like nails on a chalk board

This is exactly why I don't care for it.
However, I don't hate it either.

It's great for working out. Otherwise, it's just strange. As in, I would feel weird blaring it in my vehicle by myself. It also seems a lot more popular up in the Northeast and West coast. Like they play it in clubs/bars...I could never see a place like Bogies or Freds play dubstep.
ETA: And what souljah said. Fratties and Sorostitutes love it. They get decked out in their best neon garb, do some drugs, and then say to their friend(s), "OMFG THAT DROP WAS SOOOOOO SICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!".

I kind of like all the drum fills and screeching. The timing is mathematical, and it kind of feels like a massage in my ears.
I had some on while my wife and I were playing cards last night, though, and she could only tolerate a few minutes of it before asking me to turn it off.

I don't get it either, I've tried listening to it but there's only a couple songs that I can even tolerate. It sounds like white noise to me.

Dubstep places a heavy emphasis on the off beats and has a slower bpm usually around 180 bpm if I'm not mistaken

Dubstep is just the stepchild of techno with alot of distortion.
I can understand being fricked up and dancing to it, I'll admit I do it.
What I dont understand is people who listen to it leisurely i cant fathom the kids i see driving to class at 8 am blaring it in their trucks or the guys who just listen to it sober during the day.

Ok thanks to you and Big Lake.
Even when I did heavy drugs, was never really into that stuff. I tried to give it a chance.
Another poster said it and it's true: great workout music. That's about it for me.
