Does Adele become popular...

if Amy Winehouse doesn't die?
I've never really taken the time to listen to Amy Winehouse's stuff until today, but I'm definitely struck by Back to Black.
If Amy were still alive, would there be room for Adele?

well her debut album, 19, released prior to Winehouse's death had a #1 single, "Chasing Pavement," so yes, I think it's safe to say she'd still be famous.

Thanks for the info, Leauxgan. I'm familiar with 21, but not 19.

I can't answer that but I dig me some Amy Winehouse.
I started listening to her about a year ago out of curiosity. Her voice blew me away. They broke the mold when they made Amy.

Yes, she'd be popular. Different styles of music.
By the way, if you like the music on Back to Black, you need to check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, as well as the Dap Kings solo stuff and their collaborations. The Dap Kings were Winehouse's backing band for the album.
This is a good place to start -

Much appreciated, kage. Just for more info, what would you classify Amy and Adele as, respectively?

fun fact, Adele + Amy Winehouse went to the same school for the arts, as well as several other UK popstars: LINK

I can't change the station fast enough when she comes on.
