The recording
I remember seeing an interview with one of the recording engineers or techs who had experience with the ABB and worked on the Layla album. His memory was that Clapton had worked out with Allman that he wanted more of a live/raw/jam vibe versus more studio perfection with massive numbers of overdubs and corrections. This was jarring to the person because as he expressed it, "Because of my experience with the Allman Brothers, particularly in the studio, I was unaccustomed to hearing Duane play even a single note wrong."

I think I liked it more the first 75 million times I heard it.
my theory is that Clapton got so tired of hearing people scream out Layla at his concerts that he started doing the acoustic version of the song and it it was so bland, lackluster and uninspired, (I think on purpose), because he hoped people would stop calling for it in concert, but the acoustic version was a hit too...

I saw Clapton at UNO around 1992 or 1993. He was fantastic and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to, but as strange as it sounds, the guy looked like he didn't want to be there. This wasn't too long after his son died and I've read he was struggling to maintain his sobriety, but the guy just looked miserable. He had all the money in the world, but couldn't buy himself some happiness.
