Do people REALLY still call in for radio requests?

The wife were listening to 103.3 (her car...her station). The veejay would continuously, before a break, say "many more of your requests coming up." Just in 6 minutes, he played a request for Hootie and the Blowfish and The Human League.
Is this just now a thing to say? I can hear any song I want (especially pop radio stuff) on my cellphone via several ways. Is there anyone here a veejay or knows someone and this is just standard lying to make the station seem more viable...or do people really call in for requests?
*I get the excitement for Sirius/XM (which is often done via Facebook or twitter) and the big national FM shows, but 103.3?

I call in requests at 98.1 every now and then if I'm going to be driving a lot. That "Green Grass and High Tides" during the freeride at 5 on good friday? That was me.
I usually call in so they'll break with their usual overplayed crap and play some b-sides like "Royal Orleans", "Cities Aflame with Rock and Roll", "The Court of the Crimson King", "Go Down Gamblin'", etc.

I haven't listened to local radio in years. Sirius or music on my phone for me. I would occasionally listen to 104.9 for local sports talk but radio in Baton Rouge is just terrible.

It really really does. I look forward to the day when I can add an aux jack to my car stereo.

I believe so. I agree with you. I have thought about this for years. I think the DJ just says it to create a little buzz. The only people calling in request nowadays will be middle age and older potato heads.
