Back in the 1980's when Devo was getting air play and lots of video play on MTV, most people that I knew who bought their music didn't really view it as serious music. It was more closely aligned with Weird Al or Dr. Demento, but had a catchy sound and made you laugh a bit.

Looking back, I wonder how successful they would have been if they toned down the antics and tried to make their music a little more serious. I've always thought this song could have been popular if done with more of the grunge sound it hints at.

When you consider they were a synthesizer heavy new wave act that is known for lots of covers, it was easy for them to get dismissed as a borderline novelty act.

But, for that kind of thing - they were very talented - in the same way that Weird Al is very talented.

Founder Mark Mothersbaugh plays multiple instruments and has composed music for TV, movies, and video games for the last 30+ years. He composed all the music for "The Rugrats" for its entire run.

I'd say he is a pretty talented and accomplished musician.

Anybody who even worries about bullshite virtuoso playing abilities when it comes to more artistically inclined music is focusing on the wrong thing. And no, they were most definitely NOT "aligned with Weird Al or Dr. Demento".

Please, God save us all from "serious music".

He's also done four of the Wes Anderson movies - Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Very good to great soundtracks and his original stuff is very good as well - I looked him up because I was interested in a couple of the songs. It surprised me when I found out who had written them. So yes, very talented (Mark Mothersbaugh).

Dude you need to watch the Devo movie, being serious and corporate was what they hated and made fun of, plus their act still makes millions especially in Japan where they are gods.

Shrooms may enhance your enjoyment of the Devo Movie.....

They were masters of the Yamaha synthesizer.

Oh no it's Devo is a fricking masterpiece beginning to end. Just pure Sonic bliss. Give it a spin.

Eta having said all that this was pretty tasteless

Read the back story. She's a freak. I guess he's like "don't care having sex with 20yo"

Come on now. I enjoy some "serious" music from time to time. Something to make me think or to simply be in awe of a great musician. I also enjoy simply listening and not having to think about about what I'm listening to sometimes.
