Definition of Iconic Song

Recently had an interesting discussion on what the true definition of an iconic song should be. Is it a song of tremendous popularity and impact across all genres, is it a personal designation that's iconic to an individual based on their criteria, or is it simply the most popular period, based on total sales? I'd love to hear other opinions, and I'm not sure there is a definitive answer.

To me, it's a song that is so well done, words and music, that most people who hear it can appreciate it. It will still be relevant, even decades after it's written, because it has a universal appeal to so many people, of different walks of life. A song that almost never grows tiresome.
The kind of song, that is hard as hell to write.

What are your examples of iconic songs?
I'd offer up In The Ghetto, Elvis; Papa was a Rolling Stone, Temptations, maybe Stairway to Heaven, Zep.
I'm sure there's some classic country that deserves to be considered.

There are a lot of them, and many aren't by famous bands or artists. Brandy, by Looking Glass is a good example. Famous song, not so famous band.
Then you have Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, Kentucky Rain, Brown Sugar, Just My Imagination, Whiter Shade Of Pale, Okie From Muscogie , Folsom Prison Blues, Is Anybody Going To San Antone.. don't even need to name the artist.
