I’m a big fan of this new album. I loved the Imaginary Appalachia EP but I felt that his two albums were rather boring.

He seems to have more of a distinct style in this album. I like it.

To be fair Coltercis just copying the musical stylings and even songs of these regions. Places he has no cultural and geographical connection to. He’s a phony imo, just a different type of phony.

That's true for most song writers. We don't really live the lives of the people in the songs. Just using situations as props, to expand on a simple hook.
A good writer though, can observe and learn enough about his subject to make it believable sometimes, if he's lucky and tries real hard.
Seems to me, that the best songs are definitely written by people with a lot of different life experiences though. A guy who has always been a professional musician, and has never farmed, worked in a factory, worked construction, whatever, is going to have a hard time writing believable songs about people who really live those kinds of lives. That's why country music has become what it is, the songs are just copying other songs.
That being said, there are some (a very few) writers that are excellent observers of the world, and can pull it off.

have to say that this take is complete bullshite. he grew up in the middle of nowhere canada, 70 miles from the montana, canadian border. if you're questioning his "authenticity" his upbringing is as legit as it comes.

he writes songs about things he knows about and stories that he's read. I mean, he didn't literally shoot kate mckinnon. but that is a story told in song form.

he grew up on a damn ranch. to question his background is silly.

Prefer the 2nd one that you linked. I liked the style more, and the way he sang. If I have to give it a label though, I have to call it folk rock, more than country.

I’d ask Benjamin Tod what he thinks of Colter and his “take” on Appalachia.

Lmao. You have zero fricking clue what you’re talking about. Colter is the son of Brad Wall, a career conservative politician who served as Premier of Saskatchewan for decades. I like Colter Wall, but your assertion that he is some country local yokel, or better yet some hardened ranch hand, is hilarious. He’s a little rich punk who decided to make country music cause daddy said it was ok. Which is fine by me. I like his music

Well fair enough I guess I knew he grew up near the Montana Canadian border. Didn’t know he was the son of a politician so that’s news to me. All things considered he’s a great songwriter and I think he writes honest songs.

I saw him live last year and he was really good. I do think his opener summer dean stole the show though.

I saw him at Mid City Ballroom and wasn’t impressed at all with his live show. Turned me off of being a fan tbh.
