This track with its big beat and lush vocal backing (including a soprano) was a #4 pop hit and hugely influential. The next year Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe" would imitate the style and go to #1 on the pop chart (though curiously it did not make the country chart at all).
"Gone" is considered the birth of the "Nashville Sound", which in 1960s would threaten to kill off the classic honky tonk sound, the same way bro country and tractor rap threaten the traditional country sound today.

The title comes from a line in the movie Knock On Any Door ("I wanna live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse") that James Dean was fond of quoting. I wonder if he ever heard the song?
