I'm pretty sure I heard Billy or Dusty debunk the "Zee Zee Top" thing.
He said he didn't remember the show, didn't remember posing for the picture, but could tell the exact narrow window of time when they were formed and playing gigs like that, but right before they signed a recording deal.
He said, as far as he knew, they didn't sign any sort of release for the picture (and they were just some podunk high school dance/wedding band at the moment) and the high school yearbook just misspelled their name. They never went by Zee Zee Top.

Well, suposedly ZeeZee Top played at my brothers 9th grade prom at Oak Park Jr. High, in the Chuck. Billy's aunt taught there. Late 60's??? . He claims it true. Dunno for sure.

Has nothing to do with this thread, but my younger brother says that he knew Billy Gibbon's wife when they were kids. I looked up some info on her online, just being curious, and that name( rare name) matches a family that lived locally, and there was a girl with that same name, but I never saw her that I remember. If it's her, she went to pretty great lengths to disassociate herself from her former life. Probably too many guitar players/songwriters trying to send her demo tapes back years ago. Probably drove her family crazy.

It's possible that "ZZ Top" played a prom in Lake Charles in 1969 or 1970 and that your brother is mistaken about the spelling of the name. It's also possible that it was 1969 with Ethridge, rather than Beard, on drums. Beard only replaced him very shortly before they signed a record contract.
Once signed, they weren't playing at Knights of Columbus (Gibbons, Hill and Beard's first gig together in February 1970 or thereabouts was a Knights of Columbus in Beaumont, so Lake Charles isn't out of the realm of possibility) or proms any longer.
The picture in this thread was almost certainly April or May 1970 (prom season) and the caption was just a typo. At least based on what I've heard from one band member.

Then probably not factual. The timing of them playing anywhere close to LC would have been prior to 68. My brother was a sophomore at LC High in 68. Can you imagine them playing at a KC hall lol??
Anyway, always a cool story to hear about the band. I've been fan since the early 70's. One of my best memories was a big show in City Park, NOLA, 75' I think?
ZZ was the headliner and the other bands consisted of Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Jeff Beck and others. Damn.

Everybody started somewhere. More or less that same era, you had Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd (under various names) doing the SE college tours, mostly in Florida where they would make the circuit and change names because bookers wanted "someone new", and then rinse, repeat. Those fellas had to grind out a living some kind of way before they became rich and famous.
Just think of that period of time when just the panhandle had talent like that, Tom Petty, Skynyrd, MH, ABB, Stephen Stills, pre-Eagles Don Felder, all just playing small gigs on the same circuit trying to keep food on the table.
Texas always had a bigger music scene, so it was the same with them with SRV, Pantera, etc., and ZZ Top before that.
