Buccwild's Jay-Z MCHG Review

Posted on 7/4/13 at 1:26 am
I reviewed the tracklist as it uploaded to my phone
Track 1 - Holy Grail - This track is the sampled beat in all the commercials etc and has Timberlake on the hook, the break gives Jay a beat after the piano and it is a stark difference in the 2. I like JT's addition but it almost seems like its a bit of a JT track rather than a Jay track maybe because there is so much singing. It still has a nice melodic harmony and a little surprise (as a tribute in the lyrics to Nirvana) at the end - 8/10
Track 2. Picasso Baby - I rather like this track, it is a much more broken down Jay and the beat and break at the end fits perfectly. Despite the boast of this songs lyrics it is still a much rawer Jay on a broken down beat like the earlier Jay. - 9.5/10
Track 3. Tom Ford - Definitely a Timbaland beat and Jay flows a little more on this one and even loses it a bit halfway through, but this track lacks the star power it needed Jay to bring lyrically for the hyper beat - 5/10
Track 4. F*ckwitmeyouknowigotit - Trap music type beat starts off with Ross' elementary flow
but Jay absolutely destroys this beat plain and simple
and proves why he's still got lyrical prowess and saves the track - 6/10
Track 5. Oceans - I have become fond of Frank Ocean as a feature and he doesn't disappoint on this one. The beat seems a little too fast for Ocean, but Jay had a lot to say and again kills this beat as well. I enjoyed this track - 8/10
Track 6. F.U.T.W. - another very archaic beat that doesn't work as well as Picasso for Jays flow but it is a bit more of a slow beat and Jay rides it and gets better lyrically as the song goes on and again proves his lyrical prowess in a totally different style song - 8/10
Track 7 Somewhereinamerica - I think this is a special 2 1/2 min track added for the ppl who DLed the app since its nowhere on any tracklist, anyway I'll review an absolutely SICK beat reminiscent of old KRS actually sad this is only a 2 min track and the hook is hilarious "Miley Cyrus is still twerkin" wish this had made the album - 9/10
Through track 7 more coming

not going to lie, I'm not much of a Jay Z guy and have never really liked his stuff all that much, but this shite is nice.
Don't like every song, but really like a good amount of the songs. More than I thought I would like.

Track 8 Crown - RIDICULOUS Beat on this song will probably blow out windows another Timbaland (He put in work on this one) a little archaic rhymin but I don't even care it fits the flow. The only thing missing is a feature from 2 Chainz (would've fit this style perfectly) - 9/10
Track 9 Heaven - SICK Sample and another very strong lyrical track nothing much more to say - 9/10
Track 10 Versus - Way too short just a 51 second track with a weird beat and not strong enough lyrics to capture the way every track on the album so far has done - 4/10
Track 11 Part II (On the Run) - The Beyonce "love song" track, a lot lighter than most of the album and Beyonce is a large part of why (major parts singing) but Jay rides the piano riffs rather well and comes back in too little on this one to me but it is very clear this is a Beyonce featuring Jay type of track despite being in HIS album - 7/10
Track 12 - Beach is Better - pretty ironic track after the last one, another 1 min track mocking women about how long it takes them to get ready, nice beat though. Wish this one was longer - 6/10
Track 13 - BBC - This beat is a little bit all over the place and has a feature from Nas but he doesn't fit this track (which is hard for Nas) I think it is because the beat has such a quick count, like I said doesn't really work for me. The hook is clever but that beat just doesn't fit the album - 4/10
Track 14 - Jay Z Blue - SICK track OMG. It is clearly an ode to BIG and what he taught Jay about being a father etc but the beat is sick, he adds voice overs from BIG and just rides it. I LOVE this one - 10/10
Track 15 - La Familia - Another strong beat, a slower flow for Jay again archaic needed to be stronger lyrically - 7/10
Track 16 - Nickles & Dimes - Another ridiculous beat with a perfect pace for another slaughter reminds me a little bit of "Forever Young" but a lot better lyrically. It's a perfect end 10/10
Total 7.5/10 Hope y'all enjoyed my review

I know man just wish it was longer had to give it a 6 because I couldn't in conscious give Hightower than a 1 min track
I think the final album he releases (without the last minute adds 1 min tracks etc) will be great 9/10
Jay Z Blue is my shite though it was awesome as was Nickels & Dimes

1. Holy Grail - Seems more like JT f Jay. JT sounds good, though, his voice isn't as thin as usual. The beat is the one from the initial promo. A banger.
2. Picasso Baby - HARD track, starts out reminiscent of "So Ghetto" from Vol III then switches up to his "99 Problems" flow... murderous. Wish Primo could've been brought in to scratch on the hook.
3. Tom Ford - This track is a/b to be EVERYWHERE. Really sick. Probably the lead single.
4. frickwithmeyouknowigotit - Jay took Ross's style and completely owned him at it. This track makes me want to get in a tinted black Escalade and drive 18 mph.
5. Oceans - A good song but def a little bit below the first four. The lyrics are nasty, tho ("only Christopher we acknowledge is Wallace") and Frank Ocean does his thing.
6. FUTW - Not a standout but a decent track... could've used some work on the hook, I think. Production is crisp, tho. Some people will really dig the loop, kinda has the same rhythm as a shortened "Wankster"
7. Somewhereinamerica - Best beat on the album. So fresh. You'd think the dour piano would clash w/ the upbeat trumpet but it creates a really unique sound. The breakdown / fade out is dope.
8. Crown - Pretty simple beat but Hov goes in... "Said I'd never sell a million records, I sold a million records a/b a million times"
9. Heaven - I don't think this track is sequenced correctly... shoudn't have come at this point, it's a little too much of the same feel. Decent track, just a little dull.
10. Versus - Opening w/ the Tribe Called Quest callback was DOPE. I wish this track was 5 mins long. Love the beat. Sounds like he ends the track w/ the same laugh Kanye used to start off "Late" on Late Registration
11. Part II - There's some pretty lush production here. I don't hate this track. You knew a Beyonce feature was gonna be on here so whatever.
12. Beach is Better - Another short track. It is what it is, I'm not gonna skip around for it or anything.
13. BBC - Track is really cool, reminds me of Trick Daddy's "Dro in the Wind" beat. I dig it and Nas comes correct.
14. Jay-Z Blue - It's alright not up to the standard of Song Cry or anything. I could see it growing on me but right now I'm too hype off the other stuff to listen to this too heavily.
15. La Familia - It's aight, sorta like "Allure"... rapping is some of the weakest on the album and the beat isn't saving it. Honestly could've cut this track and lost nothing.
16. Nickel & Dimes - Great album finisher. Borrows a lot from the electro-pop sphere w/ the spaced out hook.
Rating: 8/10... near miss at a classic, depends on how it ages. Prob below Black Album and not on the level of Blueprint and Reasonable Doubt. Album is hot, though, for sure.

On my 2nd listen. I like it, jay came correct. I was disappointed in the beats originally, but they're growing on me.

Is there anywhere i can stream this or something on my phone? Im at work so i cant download

I somewhat agree but for Jay a few of the beats were pretty good but mellow style throughout the whole album
I kinda wish at times he would branch out more because his overall work would benefit (sort of the Strange Music approach of a completely open mind) but at the same time I'm sure he would get flooded with ppl wanting him to use beats so I understand it

too much timbaland and pharell, but really hes always leaned to those style beats. i'd love it if he did an album with beats that reflected nyc more.

Why did he make those few songs so short?

I can't wait for mixtapes to use the beats from MCHG, b/c holy shite they are nasty

Production is solid. Jay's rhymes solid. It is a bit hit and miss as I expected but overall I think it was better than I thought it would be. His best work since American Gangster.
