I have a guitar and some other equipment I'm thinking of selling. What's the best and easiest way to go? How much of a hit will I take if I take it to a store like guitar center or a mom and pop place vs trying to sell it myself?

What kind of rig do you have?

Finding out how much it's worth is the key here..

I have a Gibson SG '61 reissue, used ones on the internet are anywhere from 1000-1400.

A Vox 4 watt amp, new was around 300 I believe

Those are what I'm really wanting to part with, I have a few random pedals but I'm thinking of keeping them. What I really want to do is start playing bass, but I need funds to get one.

When I'm un;loading gear, I always attempt Craigslist before turning to eBay or Reverb. Guitars and amps are a pain to pack and ship so I always try to unload them locally first.

I'd go with ebay, selling it yourself..you will get the most out of it that way.

I'll give reverb a shot. I doubt I'll get much on craigslist here, small town.

Reverb is the best. I buy and sell on there all the time. Just bought an mxr iso brick yesterday for $30 cheaper than anywhere else using the make an offer function.

You could try the gear emporium at thegearpage.com forum. It gets lots of traffic, and it will let you skip ebay's fees (which have gotten rather high).

www.thehearpage.net imo, it's the best. there is a small fee for the option of posting adds in the emporiums.

guitar center will give you %60 of what it's selling for on ebay. Tops for the '61 ri would likely be around $650. Unless you just want to move it very quick, don't take it there. Those are great guitars.

This guy low balled me for my guitar, then came back with an acceptable offer. Paid me late last night. requested I ship it fed ex and have them keep it at the fed ex store close to his house. I went to fed ex after work today, they didn't have a box that would work. I went to the local guitar shop, bought a box, went back to fed ex but all their shipments for the day had left. I didn't want the guitar to sit in a freezing cold warehouse all night. Contacted the seller, I apologized and explained it to him and told him I would ship it tomorrow. He said he didn't want to buy from someone who can't get their act together and demanded a refund immediately.
