I would argue that CCR is more of a Southern Rock band

I find that the CCR's Bayou Country album is the most "Southern sounding" record there is. You'd never know that they were from California.

I don't know why the hell Tom Petty is even in this discussion.

He shouldn't be. Just because he's from Gainesville doesn't mean he has any roots with The Outlaws, Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or any other Florida-based Southern Rock outfit.

His sound has no regional identity. It's commercial rock. Granted, it's a damn good variation of commercial rock, but commercial rock nonetheless.

As does ABB. They paved the road for southern rock. MTB, Wet Wille and CBD all had albums out before LS. That is not meant to discredit LS as a band, but to put their place in a bit of context.

If were are talking about where these artists rank as musical pioneers or innovators, then I would be hard-pressed to argue that Lynyrd Skynyrd precedes The Allman Brothers.

However, bands who pave the way for future artists aren't necessarily better than subsequent acts in the same way that ancient scientists and mathematicians aren't necessarily more intelligent than future legends in their academic field.

Chuck Berry paved the way for black entertainers, but you would be unlikely to encounter many people who would definitively declare him as the best black musician in American history.

The greatest band in southern rock means at least in part and probably a large part how much do you do for southern rock. That mantle belongs to ABB.

But does it? By that token you could say that Robert Johnson is the best blues artist of all-time because of how much he influenced British and American blues musicians. However, that is certainly not the case.

Innovation and 'best/greatest' are not synonymous with one another. They are each deserving of their own respective lists and debates.

I'm not a fan of "southern rock" in general, but this is one of my favorite bands from the south.
