LINK
I don't know if I'd give them #1 for the entire decade though.

It's a very subjective thing but for me the best band of the 70's has to be Led Zeppelin. Opinions will vary of course

Early Roxy Music is underrated by most
As they influenced pretty much all of the new romantic/new wave/punk sound
But the ‘70s were choked full of so much greatness
And people’s taste vary

Probably the Stones, The Who, Led Zep or Steely Dan if we're talking beginning of the decade all the way through 1979.
And Pink Floyd
And Pink Floyd

Absolutely FANTASTIC band. Too much went on in the 70s to call them the best. Eno also had graciously bowed out well before this clip (six years earlier, no?), as this band was Ferry's thing (and he was stealing the show from Ferry).
Their best work was post Eno, but Ferry drove them into romantic drivel.

Manzanera is unchained, BTW
Thompson, as well (a drummer I've always admired)
Bass was always sexy, and probably the main reason for their link to 80s and new romanticism.
Can't say who's playing here. I think it's not Wetton. It's funkier.

They weren't known in the US, until Siren (only because of Love is the Drug). I understand some US critics loved them, but weren't capable of creating critical mass amongst US promoters.
They were immediately and always important in Europe.
CPL593H!
All of Europe.
