Maybe the old Varsity, but the recent bookings have actually put a lot more quality on the stage.

Well, in recent years that has been the case more times than not.

Also, the issue isn't that no metal bands stop in Baton Rouge, but that the wrong ones, the "vanilla" acts, were doing so. It wasn't offering much more than what you can expect to see in Lafayette.

If you wanted to attend an extreme metal or a more eccentric band, you typically have to drive down to New Orleans.

I like Sevendust and I can respect bands like Trivium, but neither one of them offer anything particularly unique that warrants attending a live concert, both from sound and performance aspects. I've seen Sevendust live before. They sounded great and got the crowd involved, but seeing them once was enough. Maybe it's because they're nu-metal and they get lumped in with a number of late '90s and early '00s bands that have lacked longevity.

Regardless, it's important to appeal to fans of all subgenres of metal, and usually that requires branching out and occasionally booking less mainstream or more eccentric acts.

In the next few months, Baton Rouge will have phenomenal representatives of stoner, doom, sludge, and thrash. Just a few months ago, I witnessed one of the best death metal shows in Louisiana in quite some time. And that just brightens my day.

Going back about 10 years when the Varsity was just rotating Benjy Davis, BTE, and various 80s cover bands, I saw an up coming band called Mastodon play for about 200 people at Renaissance (to be fair they also played at Ichabod's), Grant St had Gwar twice, Down, Hatebreed, Clutch, Chimaira, Suffocation, and some Goatwhore, Soilent Green, and Crowbar shows sprinkled in. Plus newcomers like Trivium and FFDP played there. LOG played Blackham Coliseum in 2009. Then Grant St slowed down and The Station in Broussard opened. Sevendust, Down, Soulfly all played there multiple times. Fear Factory, Chimaira, Butcher Babies, Otep, Crowbar, and Goatwhore all played there as well. Plus you had the Cajundome bringing in one or two big shows every year.

Since The Station closed there hasn't been much in the way of big name bands coming through but they still have a strong local scene with The District, JPs, and a few other places doing local shows on a regular basis.
