Looking to try my hand at a little banjo picking.
I’m an acoustic player (and I’m being generous when I say player) who’s looking to expand.
Usually play rhythm, but do a good bit of finger picking.
Never had or even held a banjo. Would be a complete banjo newbie.
Any banjo players have any suggestions?

Been messing around with it off and on myself for a few years. My best advice, is different from what I would give on a first guitar. Don't spend a lot of money on one at first, just as long the neck is straight and can be adjusted, it will do. Don't get one that's too heavy, you won't want to pick it up. Recording King makes some decent ones that aren't too expensive, they sell them at Guitar Center.
A sliding top string capo is nice to have, but that can be added on later. Good luck on it.

Thanks auggie.
As a side note, your Guitar Playing thread is going really good. Some valuable information people are posting. I hope it continues to grow.

Recording King makes some really nice stuff that sounds great and is modeled after the great Gibson banjos. You can pick up a nice one for $600-$800 and honestly you could play that for the rest of your life. Really good sound for the money. Hell, really good sound period.
I got mine here because these a local Alabama guys, but I'm sure they sell them other places. Been super happy with mine.

All about the right hand. Rolls, rolls, rolls. My son has a Deering Goodtime banjo, open back, but they have resonator kit available for it. It is definitely plenty loud with the open back, and super light weight. Deering builds top-notch stuff.
