Actually give this group a listen. They're not awful.

True, I'm just acknowledging the fact that they suck.

Cage the Elephant: their first album was fantastic, a breath of fresh air, but all of their subsequent albums have been meh at best. None of the raw emotion or aggressive hard rock fun of their debut.

As for local bands, I thought Luke Starkiller had a shot. Great musicians, outstanding vocals, and really fun and interesting originals.

Nashville machine shut that down though

I really thought St. Paul and the Broken Bones was going to make it big when I first heard their hit then his shtick became old and over the top

The Hooters. Philadelphia group had a huge first album and then just disappeared.

The Hives

Thought they would surpass The Strokes and White Stripes in the early 2000’s arms race.

Even by the time I was a teenager in the '80s, I had already given up the illusion than any band I really cared about would be the "next big thing". Punk/New Wave failed its intended takeover, dinosaurs like REO Speedwagon were bigger than ever, synths took over the UK charts, and the plague of MTV was upon us.

I suppose the Clash came closest, though no one in their right mind ever thought they would be the NBT.

If you promise not to tell anybody, I'll confess that for about 15 minutes I thought Elvis Costello might become a big star, in the manner of Bowie -- solid record seller and a media superstar who gives glib interviews. But for a variety of reasons that never happened.

Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza...I miss this band. Their music was a thing of beauty.

I was always surprised that the Producers weren't more popular.

My go to answer for this question is always The Kaiser Chiefs.

Their albums Employment(2005) and Yours Truly, Angry Mob(2007) are both pretty good.

They are pretty popular in the U.K. Maybe like a Weezer or Green Day are over here. When they show up to festivals like Glastonbury, they always have the crowd going, but they are never and never will be the headliner.

"Ruby" was a pretty popular song among the "alt" crowd, but they just never took off here. That sucks, because they rarely make it over here. If they do, I'm a bit old to be going to Kaiser Chiefs concerts now anyway.

Honorable Mention goes to First Aid Kit. They are a combination of Folk/Americana/Country/Pop--with an edge. They deserve to be on Saturday Night Live in support of their new album being released in January. They probably won't get much wider publicity because their music is too good, too well written, too thoughtful, and too awesome. They are sublime.

Great answer! I actually got into them because of the video game Rock Band and grew to really like them.
